Dr. Brian Harkins specializes in the precise treatment of various spleen conditions using advanced surgical techniques, ensuring successful and efficient recovery for our patients.
The spleen is a part of the lymphatic system. It stores blood, filters blood by removing cellular waste and getting rid of old or damaged blood cells, makes white blood cells and antibodies that help you fight infection, and produces antibodies that protect you against these spleen conditions. The spleen can become swollen (enlarged) as a result of a health condition, such as infections or cancer. Complications of an enlarged spleen are splenomegaly, hypersplenism, and or a ruptured spleen.
Dr. Brian Harkins and his team will work with you to manage and treat conditions involving the spleen.
An enlarged spleen can reduce the number of healthy red blood cells, platelets and white cells in your bloodstream, leading to more frequent infections. Any conditions that cause a rapid breakdown of blood cells, such as haemolytic anemia, can place great strain on the spleen and make it large. Other causes of splenomegaly include infections such as glandular fever, liver disease and some cancers (Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia and lymphoma).
This refers to the overactive function of the spleen. The two characteristics of hypersplenism are splenomegaly and a deficiency of one or more blood components. An overactive spleen may destroy more blood cells than necessary, leading to various complications.
Symptoms depend on which blood component is affected. If red blood cells are deficient, anemia can develop, causing fatigue and pallor. If platelets are affected, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) may occur, a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks platelets, increasing the risk of bleeding and easy bruising.
A ruptured spleen is typically caused by a blow to the left upper abdomen or the left lower chest, which can happen during sporting accidents, fistfights, or car crashes. An injured spleen can rupture soon after the abdominal trauma or, in some cases, days or weeks after the injury. The possibility of rupture is much greater when your spleen is enlarged. A ruptured spleen can cause life-threatening bleeding in your abdominal cavity.
